Let’s get Real!

Posted by wisdomtree on December 10, 2008

We live in a world of lies, spin and deceit. People say to you things that they don’t mean. They tell other people things about you that aren’t true. Everything is given a spin. Insignificant things are hyped and then presented as a grand spectacle. A word is no longer a word. A promise is no longer a promise.

Not surprisingly, there is a heightened sense of mistrust. People do not trust another person that easily. People do not build bridges that easily. On the contrary, they build walls around themselves. The older you grow, the higher and thicker these walls become.

And yet, despite the walls, there is a desire for ‘relationality’.  We dream of meaningful friendships that are true, good and beautiful.  Why do we then seek relationships/friendships? Why do we want these friendships to last?  We mistrust even the best of intentions.  But, why are we  surprised when ‘friends’ betray us? Why are we shocked to see their masks fade away? Why does it surprise us when people use us?

This song in Life Mein Kabhi Kabhi is an amazing song.

If you look close enough
Behind the face is another face
Another curtain behind the curtain
If you think hard enough
Behind the curtain there’s another curtain

It’s a profound secret
Who knows what is in whose heart?
Deep and profound, it’s a big secret.
Who knows what lies in the heart?

If you look closely…
Behind the face.
There’s another face behind the facade.
If you think hard enough
behind the curtain
There’s a curtain behind the curtain.

Profound and deep.
It’s a profound secret
Who knows what lies in whose heart?

Someone is lost in thoughts
Another is arogant with his wealth
One is caught in a trap
The other is a famous name.
Everyone’s aims and goals are different.
Everyone has different likes

Profound and deep.
It’s a profound secret
Who knows what lies in whose heart?

Even the high one feels in love is fake
The flame burns bright but there is no glow
The promise of the lover is false
But this has become an accepted societal practice.
The sighs of lovers has always been cold
There’s treachery even in loyalty

Profound and deep.
It’s a profound secret
Who knows what lies in whose heart?

Life mein kabhi kabhi tells the story of Rajeev, Jai, Monica and Ishita and their tryst with happiness. But…they wear masks. In fact, they juggle masks – the right one for the right moment. Everyone’s aims and goals are different.

  • Rajeev wants to prove his worth to his big brother. The brother has no clue of what is in Rajeev’s heart.
  • Monica is caught in a trap. She would prefer to tell a 100 lies to save her love. And yet, her promise to Mohit is false.
  • Jai is lost in thoughts. He is battling his conscience (?). He’s always got something up his sleeve. If you need to thrive and survive in politics you need to have trump card. You can’t be real. You can’t be predictable. That’s the way to be.
  • Ishita is a famous name, because she’s married to rich man’s money. There’s no love. There’s no companionship. It’s a convenient arrangement. Even the high one feels in love is fake.

Who knows what lies in the hearts of Rajeev, Jai, Monica and Ishita? And yet, there is real struggle to have meaningful friendships/relationships. True, its a world of hype, spin and deceit. Yet, we need to offer people friendship that is real, good and delightful. Are we real? What masks do we wear? It’s time to get real.
